Dev Patel, the Oscar-nominated actor, who shot to fame for his roles in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘Lion’, is returning to screens with his directorial debut titled ‘Monkey Man‘. The action film that draws inspiration from the legend of the Hindu deity, Lord Hanuman, marks the Hollywood debut of actress Sobhita Dhulipala and also features Sikander Kher as the antagonist.
The trailer of the film, backed by Oscar-winner Jordan Peele, released online late last night and has since captured the attention of Indian fans. The clip has garnered all sorts of reactions from excited fans who are now dubbing Dev as ‘Indian John Wick’.
Some even went as far as saying that Patel’s debut directorial venture is the answer to the question, “What if an INDIAN made an ACTION MOVIE?!”Others were intrigued to know how the action flick connects this modern-day tale to the legend of Lord Hanuman.
“Loved the integration of Hanuman into Dev Patel’s #MonkeyMan. The colour palette perfectly suits this action flick, the action setpieces look slick, the trailer edit was simply LIT. Also, you have Sikander Kher as your antagonist,” a fan commented.
“Monkey man actually seems interesting because it seems to have an interesting story with actually cool themes centred around Hanuman and the Hindu religion. I’m excited to see it,” said another.
However, there were others who couldn’t help but ask why the movie, which features shots of what appears to be scenes from the Ramayan, did not refer to the Hindu god as ‘Hanuman’. “Wonder why they called it Monkey Man and not Hanuman,” asked a fan.

Another guessed that the makers titled the movie as ‘Monkey Man’ instead of ‘Hanuman’ to cater to the western audience. A tweet read, “This looks so good…i understand that he had to d*mb down the concept of Hanuman as “Monkey Man” for western audience. But man…. I soooo wish they had atleast kept one scene where they referred to Hanuman as Hanuman instead of “white monkey“.
The film follows Patel’s character on a quest for vengeance, employing firearms, blades, and sheer brutality against his adversaries. Set for an April 5 release in theatres, the film’s international cast includes Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, and Makarand Deshpande.
