Highlight’s Gi-kwang has stepped forward to address the buzz surrounding his portrayal in the popular drama ‘Marry My Husband‘, sharing his struggle with dialect and overall working experience.
In a recent appearance on ‘Strong Heart VS’, Gi-kwang opened up about his work on the series, which had just wrapped up its run. Despite his pivotal role in the drama, Gi-kwang exhibited humility, modestly downplaying his impact on its success. He remarked, “I played a small and minor role in the drama and didn’t do anything significant”, as quoted by Allkpop. Acknowledging the global praise the drama received, particularly ranking first on Amazon Prime, Gi-kwang revealed insights into its effects on his personal platforms. He disclosed, “My followers increased by 40,000, and the engagement (likes and comments) of my posts increased by about 3-4 times. It would have been better if it increased even more”.
Reflecting on the preparation required for his character portrayal, especially given his background as a singer, Gi-kwang emphasized the attention to skincare. He highlighted, “On stage, you can’t see pores or wrinkles due to the constant movement. But in a drama, every detail is visible – from the face to the expression and even eye movements. So, I focused a lot on skincare, drank lots of water, and took good care of myself”.
Sharing a glimpse into the challenges he faced, particularly when filming scenes involving dialect usage, Gi-kwang recounted the nerve-wracking experience of shooting in Cheonggyecheon (renowned stream in Seoul). He admitted, “My character uses a dialect and there was a scene where I confessed my feelings where I shouted ‘I like you.’ We were filming at Cheonggyecheon which was filled with couples and I was sweating so much on my back”.
Hailing from Gwangju, Jeolla Province, Gi-kwang candidly admitted the hurdles of adapting to the Gyeongsang (Busan) dialect required for his role. He confessed, “I’m not used to the accent or the lines, so it was difficult”. In addition to his acting project, Gi-kwang teased fans with hints of Highlight’s impending comeback, stating, “I’ve finished filming a music video and prepared for a short-form challenge with a vibe targeting millennials and Gen Z”.
When posed with the hypothetical choice between starring as the male lead in ‘Marry My Husband 2’ or achieving a million album sales with Highlight, Gi-kwang’s loyalty to his team shone through. He asserted, “I prefer the team doing well. Even if there’s a season 2 of ‘Marry My Husband,’ I won’t be the lead because Na In Woo’s there”.
