AR Rahman used AI software to recreate the voices of late singers Bamba, Bakya, and Shahul Hameed in ‘Lal Salaam.’ Perhaps, soon we will see more and more composers bring back the voices of yesteryear singers.
Lyricist Sameer Anjaan feels it is scary and a big challenge and wants the authorities to step in. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, Sameer said, “It is a challenge. The government should take strict steps because a lot of meetings and discussions are happening all over the world about the use of AI. There were strikes regarding the same in the US.’’
Sameer talks about the misuse of AI which needs to be curbed. He said, ` if you use Lata Ji’s voice, what happens to the original creator? Who has the rights? Who will get the money? Will the rights of the original composer and lyricist be reserved? Today, when a song is remixed, the original gets 50% and the artist who remixes it gets 50%. That is still fine. What happens in AI? There’s no copyright of the voice, no?
The music fraternity has also held several meetings with the government to find a resolution and the government is concerned about this issue. A lot of talks are happening. We are hopeful to get a result that is in favour of the original artists.‘’
Sameer also thinks that AI is definitely not healthy for the film and the music fraternity and law has to come into place he also reasons, “Whoever has the copyrights of the original creation, they have to get the money. In AI, you don’t get anything. It is dangerous. You can’t stop any new invention. But if it is not beneficial then the people who create the original work will be finished. If there’s a law of the land then no matter who recreates something using AI, they have to pay the royalties to the original creators. In the copyright law, our rights are non-assignable. The problem is that this is a completely new thing that has come and the government is also unaware of it. We don’t want to shut down AI, we want to preserve our rights. The government will have to take some steps to resolve this issue.”
