The announcement of the show comes after its impressive performance since its May 1 launch on Netflix. In an interview with Variety, Bhansali revealed his plans for the next chapter in the ‘Heeramandi’ saga. The director shared that Season 2 will see the women of Heeramandi move from Lahore to the film world.
“They leave Lahore after the partition and most of them settle in the Mumbai film industry or Kolkata film industry,” SLB shared and went on to add, “So that journey in the bazaar remains the same. They still have to dance and sing, but this time for the producers and not for the nawabs.”Rumours are rife that the director will begin work on the production in 2026, after the release of his film ‘Love and War’ starring Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal and Ranbir Kapoor in lead roles. An official confirmation on the same is still awaited.
In its first week, ‘Heeramandi’ soared to the top of Netflix’s worldwide non-English TV chart in 43 countries, becoming one of the most-viewed Indian series on the platform. The series held the No. 1 spot on India’s Top 10 chart since its debut.
Set between 1920 and 1947, during partition, Season 1 of the drama begins in the Heeramandi district of Lahore, British India. This historical narrative focuses on the lives of tawaifs, and their role in the freedom struggle. While the series opened to rave reviews, it also received it share of criticism for taking ‘creative liberties’ while depicting the lives of the women of Heeramandi.
Season 1 saw Manisha Koirala and Sonakshi Sinha play lead roles, alongside a cast including Sharmin Segal, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Indresh Malik, among others. It is still unclear who will return for the next season, considering characters played by actors Taha Shah, Aditi Rao Hydari and Richa Chaddha meet their end in the series.
