The heartbreaking post-mortem report of the 31-year-old doctor from West Bengal has left the nation heavy-hearted, prompting many social media users to raise concerns about the safety of women in their workplaces.
Now, actress Alia Bhatt has shared a lengthy post on her Instagram account to emphasize how atrocities against women have not changed even after the Nirbhaya tragedy. The actress also highlighted the importance of women leading better lives.
Check out the post here:

Alia started by writing, ‘Another brutal rape. Another day of realization that women are not safe anywhere. Another horrific atrocity to remind us that it’s been over a decade since the Nirbhaya tragedy, yet nothing much has changed.’
She further cited examples and statistics from the past few years: ‘Let the statistics speak: • 30% of India’s doctors and 80% of our nursing staff are women. In an environment of growing violence against medical personnel, it’s the women who are more vulnerable. • Since 2022, there has been a 4% increase in crimes against women, over 20% of which involve rape and assault. • Nearly 90 rapes a day were reported in India in 2022. *Sources include the National Crime Records Bureau report 2022.’
Alia also shed light on the lack of safety in workplaces for women: ‘How are all of us, as women, supposed to feel? How are we supposed to go to work or go about our daily lives with this playing on our minds? This horrific incident has once again reminded us that women disproportionately bear the weight of ensuring their own safety.’

The ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ actress also urged those in power to prioritize women’s safety: ‘Despite the many crimes and all the women who have suffered, there is no real recourse or hope that things will change. We could not save this young woman, but we can try to prevent it from happening again. My request to those in power is to: • FOCUS on the safety of women • FOCUS on creating safe spaces and increasing all avenues of protection • FOCUS on the why. The writing is on the wall that there is something fundamentally wrong with the way our society currently functions. These repeated inhuman acts towards women prove that there is something wrong at a root level, and unless we dig deep and uproot the cause, nothing is going to change!’
She concluded by saying, ‘Don’t tell women to change their path—change the terrain. Every woman deserves better.’
A Kolkata Police civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy was arrested on Saturday in connection with the horrific rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. The arrest occurred just six hours after a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed by the police to investigate the case. On August 11, investigators found crucial evidence against Sanjay Roy, who is the main suspect in the rape and murder of the 31-year-old doctor. A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team has arrived in Kolkata to take over the case, and the nation is witnessing strong protests from doctors and nurses.
