In her acceptance speech on Friday night, Sengupta said, “You don’t have to be queer to fight for equality, you don’t have to be colonised to know that colonising is pathetic — we just need to be very, very decent human beings.” She dedicated her award to the queer community and other marginalised communities for bravely fighting for their rights all around the world.
‘The Shameless’ premiered at the Cannes on May 17. The film dwels into the world of exploitation and misery. It revolves around two sex workers who are bearing the struggles of their line of work. Sengupta plays the character of Renuka who runs from a Delhi brother after stabbing a policeman. She goes to Northern India and meets a community of sex workers. There she meets Devika who is condemned to a life of prostitution.
‘The Shameless’ also stars Mita Vashisht, Tanmay Dhanania, among others in key roles.
