Andy Cohen thinks Bravo was smart to announce a reboot of “Vanderpump Rules.”
On November 26, the network announced that the long-running restaurant-based reality show would be rebooted with an all-new cast for season 12. Days later, the Bravo host and producer said he was “impressed” by how long the show lasted with a cast that was no longer connected to SUR.
Lisa Vanderpump’s West Hollywood restaurant originally served as the centerpiece for the series, but in recent years none of the cast worked there. Tom Sandoval and Raquel Leviss’ cheating scandal also caused a deep divide amongst the cast.
Andy Cohen Compared ‘Vanderpump Rules’ to ‘Real Housewives of New York City’
Speaking on his Sirius XM show“Andy Cohen Live” on December 2, Cohen said revamping “Vanderpump Rules” after 11 seasons was “the absolute right thing to do.”
“I am so impressed with how production kept the show going over the last, I’m going to say four years, when slowly, but surely, none of them were working at SUR,” Cohen added. “The entire point of the show morphed and changed as it went on.”
“They’re all having good success outside of SUR,” Cohen said of the cast members. “Several have very, very organically moved on to ‘The Valley,’ which makes very perfect sense. And then you have others who don’t want to be in the same room, much less on the same show with each other, and that makes sense too. So, what you were left with was really just a few pieces of what the original ‘Vanderpump Rules’ was. So I think this is a very smart programming move.”
Cohen pointed out that a similar reboot happened with “The Real Housewives of New York City” after 13 seasons. “It’s what I keep saying about RHONY,” he added. “In RHONY’s case, we had 13 seasons of a show that was so beloved and so great and it went on and on. And sometimes for a show it’s the end of the road or it’s time to curve or swerve or pivot, and that’s where we were with RHONY and that is what is happening with ‘Vanderpump Rules.”
The “Watch What Happens Live” host also noted that “Vanderpump Rules” season 11 finale episode felt like a series finale.
Andy Cohen Agreed That VPR Needed a Pause After Season 11
In April, TMZ reported that ‘Vanderpump Rules” would go on a brief pause to give the cast a break amid the Scandoval fallout. At the time, Cohen downplayed the pause on his Sirius XM show.
“Yeah, we used to do this all the time with the Housewives,” he said on “Andy Cohen Live” in early 2024. “We would say, ‘You know what? Let’s put cameras down for, you know, four or five months and come back to them,’ and they will have lived, you know, life. Things will be different.”
“Sometimes you want to pick cameras right up quickly because there’s stuff happening and you want to get in there right away and sometimes you do want people to live their lives and see how things develop and you know, so, I think it’s a very good idea,” he added.
Cohen is an executive producer on the “Real Housewives” shows but his only involvement with “Vanderpump Rules” is to host the reunions.
