New Delhi singer-songwriter Niki Choudhury has released her eighth song, a funk-inspired Hindi pop tune “Taare” as part of her song series Monthly Melodies.
Released earlier this month, the Assam-raised artist has been exploring pop sounds right from her debut single “Awaara Dil” in April 2024. From Urdu lyrics to Punjabi tunes (“Vekhu Tenu”), Choudhury has been releasing a song each month, ending the year with “Taare.”
She says about the song, “‘Taare’ is about someone deeply in love, who misses their partner and dreams of being with them. It’s all about how important their partner is to them and how they feel complete only when they’re together.”
Specifically referring to the lyrics “Toote se taare” Choudhury says it’s about the lengths that a partner can go for their loved one. “Even bringing stars from the sky if it makes them happy. They’re asking their partner to understand how much they need them. It’s a simple and emotional love song, filled with longing and the desire to always be close to the one they love,” she adds.
“Taare” follows Choudhury’s chill-pop Hindi/Punjabi song “Vekhu Tenu” with singer-songwriter and producer Jersxy and bops like “Aaya Na Tu,” electronic-leaning songs like “Haal” and “Arzu” and more. She says,“My songs are pop-based, [but] I sometimes mix it up with R&B/soul or EDM, or [they are] a bit K-pop-influenced. My idea of songs comes from dreams of people. Love and sadness are both made of dreams. [It’s] dreams of expectations — that blurry line where you forget reality and dive deep in the thoughts. That’s where I get my creativity from.”
Currently studying to earn a Ph.D in design from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in New Delhi, Choudhury has a background in kathak and Rabindra Nritya dance forms, plus Hindustani classical and Nazrul Geeti music training.
