Doechii had the 2025 Grammys audience on its feet as she accepted the Best Rap Album award for her 2024 mixtape, “Alligator Bites Never Heal.” Cardi B, who won the award in 2019, presented the award to the Tampa native early in the awards ceremony on February 2, 2025.
Doechii’s Full 2025 Grammys Speech
In tears over her win, Doechii brought her mom up to the stage with her and hugged Cardi B before beginning saying, “I don’t want to make this long, but this category was introduced in 1989 and two women have won — Lauryn Hill.” Doechii then stopped herself and exclaimed, “Three women have won! Lauryn Hill, Cardi B and Doechii!”
Hill won the award with the Fugees in 1999 for “The Score” and Cardi B won the award for “Invasion of Privacy” in 2019.
“I put my heart and soul into this mixtape,” she continued, tearing up again. “I bared my life. I went through so much, I dedicated myself to sobriety, and God told me that I would be rewarded and then he would show me just how good it can get.”
“And I have to thank God, I need to thank my beautiful mother for coaching me,” Doechii said. “I want to thank my label, my engineer, Jada, for everything she did. My fans, to the Swamp. There’s so many people out there who probably don’t know who I am. I call myself the Swamp Princess because I’m from Tampa, Florida. There’s so much culture in Tampa. Whenever people think about Florida, they only think about like Miami. But Tampa has so much talent. Labels, go to Tampa. There’s talent there! Okay, thank you so much to my label, TV and everybody that helped put this together, all the producers on the project. I thank you. Thank you to hip hop.”
Doechii then had a special message that moved many in the audience and brought them to their feet.
“Um, the last thing I want to say.” she said, “I know that there is some black girl out there, so many black women out there, that are watching me right now, and I want to tell you, you can do it. Anything is possible. Anything is possible.”
As the crowd cheered, she continued, “Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you that tell you that you can’t be here, that you’re too dark, or that you’re not smart enough, or that you’re too dramatic or you’re too loud. You are exactly who you need to be to be right where you are and I am a testimony. Praise God!”
Doechii Was Featured on Katy Perry’s 2024 Single, ‘I’m His, He’s Mine’
Katy Perry fans may recognize Doechii for her performance on the 2024 MTV Music Awards with the former “American Idol” judge. The two teamed up for a live performance of their single from Perry’s new album, “143,” called “I’m Him, He’s Mine.”
In October, Doechii told BuzzFeed she had “no problem” entering the pop music space with Perry.
“I’m a rock star too,” she told the outlet. “I know I’ve got a hard rap mixtape but I’m a rock star, and I love pop music. It’s not hard for me to genre bend — I’m a chameleon when it comes to music. If it’s a song that resonates me, I just have to naturally lay it down. So I have no problem being in that space.”
