‘Idol’ Alum Emmy Russell Hospitalized With Complications After Welcoming Baby: ‘Prayers Welcomed’

Nearly eight months after making it into the Top 5 on season 22 of “American Idol,” singer-songwriter Emmy Russell is thrilled to be a first-time mom. But on the evening of February 2, 2025, her husband, Tyler Ward, shared a video on her Instagram account that left fans and friends concerned.

Ward wrote in the caption of his post, “Emmy & baby update. Prayers welcomed 🙏” and shared in his video that their baby girl’s delivery was a “really, really tough situation” and that Russell was still hospitalized due to complications nearly 72 hours later.

Emmy Russell Says Her Postpartum Challenges Will ‘All Be Worth It’

Russell, who is country legend Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter, didn’t reveal her pregnancy publicly until December 10, while appearing with her mom, Patsy, on the “Got It From My Momma” podcast. Russell told host Jennifer Vickery Smith and the live audience that she and Ward were expecting a baby girl,

On February 2, Ward posted a selfie video from his wife’s dimly lit hospital room and said, “Just want to update everybody. Emmy can’t post, so I’m posting on her behalf.”

“We got to the hospital Wednesday evening, when Emmy’s water broke,” Ward explained in his video. “Gave birth Friday morning at 2:30 a.m. and it was a really, really tough situation, and she’s still here in the hospital. We almost got discharged, and then this.”

Ward then turned the camera toward Russell, in her hospital bed holding their baby girl, whose name they have not publicly released.

“So what happened, sweetheart?” he asked, and Russell responded quietly, “So, we almost got discharged and I’m feeling woozy and I got up, and I thought I was gonna pass out. So they told me that I lost a liter of blood and I’m gonna have to get a blood transfusion.”

“So we’re gonna test again and see if I have to get more blood, but it’s gonna be worth it,” she said, trying to sound cheery through her fatigue.

Fans & Friends, Including ‘American Idol’ Alums, Offer Words of Support to Emmy Russell

Friends and fans flooded the comment section of Ward’s post, sending love and prayers to the couple. Many past “Idol” contestants not only know Russell but also Ward, because he runs the Nashville-based songwriting collaborative Song House, which has worked with many rising songwriters and performers to perfect their craft.

Among the “Idol” alums who “liked” his update were season 22 winner Abi Carter, fellow top 5 finalist Tristan Harper (whose girlfriend is also expecting a baby), and season 21 finalist Wé Ani.

Season 21 “Idol” alum Matt Wilson wrote, “Praying right me fam 🙏🏾”

Another season 21 alum, Rebecca Bruner, commented, “Omg love you guys sm ❤️”

Many other fans and friends left encouraging comments on the post, including one who wrote, “Hope for healing and strength in the days to come. Thanks to those who donate blood for those in need❣️🙌🏼 we all have something to give that someone else can’t live without.”

As Ward and Russell were waiting for their baby to arrive, they posted a video montage on January 30 with highlights of their life as a couple, noting that it would likely be the last night as just the two of them.

On January 31, Ward posted a brief video of himself holding their daughter with the words “12 hours old” typed over it, and the caption “Healthy baby. #newborn #girldad” but no details on Russell. Before posting his update on Russell’s profile, he posted another video of himself holding their baby girl on February 2 and wrote, “36 hours old.”
