Singing icon Rick Springfield has shared the secrets to his 40-year marriage.
For starters, Springfield told People that people should “always assume the argument is (expletive).”
“Sometimes me and Barbara start arguing, and then we stop and start laughing because it’s a familiar pattern, and we know it means nothing,” Springfield told People about his marriage to wife, Barbara Porter.

The key to a happy marriage, said Springfield, is to always make up, even when times get tough.
“Most of our arguments are about things we love, like the dog or a kid,” he told People Magazine.
“But we always make up. There’s been tough times when we’ve tried to find a third person to talk to, and I think that’s really important. I guess if anyone asks, ‘How do you stay married?’ I just say, ‘Don’t get divorced.’ That’s really all it is,” he added.

Springfield told Fox News that he and his wife have remained close throughout the years.
“We played Monopoly the other day with the guy that works at my studio and that was a trip,” he shared. “I haven’t done that in 40 years, and it was hilarious. We had a blast. I never had time for stuff like that before.”
According to Fox, Springfield met his wife when he was recording at a studio in the 1970s, and she also worked there. She was only a teenager though so they didn’t date until they met again in 1981, Fox reported.
“I eventually split up with my girlfriend and by the time I did, she was 18,” he told Fox. “I’d always thought about her because she worked in the office at Sound City. I called her up on one brave moment and asked her out.”
Springfield told People of his wife, “Nothing started happening [in my career] until I hooked up with her,” he says. “That’s because, once your attitude changes, and you’re open to everything, then things start to happen, and I was kind of closed, I was stressed out not having money and not having any success and being on my own in America, away from my family.”
He added to the publication, “When I met her, all of that didn’t matter anymore. I still didn’t have any money. I still hadn’t done anything career-wise, but the power of having someone with you on the journey, you can’t underestimate it.”
