Sarah Michelle Gellar has dropped a bomb on die-hard fans of her 90’s WB series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” The star posted on Instagram that a Buffy revival is in the works.
While fans have clamored for a Buffy revival for years, Gellar has always resisted the idea, until now. In her post, she explains that three years ago she agreed to a meeting with Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao, to hear her take on a potential “Buffy” reboot. Gellar writes, “I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I’ve always done, I told Gail that I just didn’t see a way for the show to exist again. We’d always been aligned on that, but this time I heard something different in her voice. I eventually agreed to go (mainly just to meet Chloé) and our twenty minute coffee quickly turned into a four hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to us.”
“Buffy” Revival Talks Continued for Three Years
Conversations continued over the next three years, adding veteran television writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman to the mix. And Gellar says they eventually landed on an idea. “This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet,” Gellar writes. “I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there. I feel so lucky to be on this journey with these four unbelievably talented women, all of whom love “Buffy” as much as I do. And as much as you do. Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this. This will be for you.”
Gellar Would Executive Produce, But Would She Star?
According to Variety Magazine, Gellar would executive produce the series along with television executive Gail Berman, who initiated the talks with Chloé Zhao. She’ll act in it as well, but won’t necessarily be the focus of the new show.
Sources say while Gellar will resume her “Buffy” role, the revival project will focus on a new Slayer with Gellar in a recurring role rather than a lead role.
Variety also reports that a pilot order by Hulu is imminent.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” Maintains Following Nearly 30 Years After Debut
News of a revival is a dream come true to longtime fans of the series, which ran on the WB starting in 1997 for five seasons and then UPN for two seasons. The Rotten Tomatoes synopsis says, “Buffy is a Slayer, one in a long line of young women chosen for a specific mission: to seek out and destroy vampires, demons and other forces of darkness. Unlike her predecessors, Buffy establishes a group of supportive friends who aids her in her battles with evil, including Willow, Xander and Cordelia. Her battles with evil are frequent, since Sunnydale, where Buffy and friends live, sits atop a gateway to the realm of the demons.”
The series was based on the 1992 film by the same name, starring Kristy Swanson.
Gellar’s 4.6 million Instagram followers were quick to celebrate the star’s announcement. “Buffy coming in our time of need is so on brand 😫❤️” wrote one. “Omg we are so ready for this! We’ve waited 22 years 🙌 whatever you have to offer, as long as you’re involved. Buffy returns 😭😍,” commented another.
And fans are expecting big things from the reboot. “I must’ve reread this about 30 times now! She’s been carefully planning and considering this for years! It’s not just a silly cash grab.. SMG is the most protective of Buffy so we just know she’s gonna knock it out of the park 😍,” said one follower. “Honestly thrilled about this. The idea of visiting this character again in a new part of life is very exciting. Life does not stop at high school or college or the hellmouth opening up. (We’re all still here, after all, aren’t we?). There are still stories to tell,” enthused another.
You can stream all seven seasons of the original series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” on Hulu and Disney +.
