Not much will convince Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour to take off her trademark sunglasses. But an appointment with royalty did the trick!
The glasses came off when King Charles III presented Wintour with the Order of the Companions of Honour at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. Wintour was decorated for her services to fashion, as well as her philanthropic work fundraising for HIV/AIDs research and for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
The honor is given to those deemed to have made a major contribution to the arts, science, medicine or government. And its an elite group. Only 65 people can be a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour at any one time. Dame Anna Wintour joins current members Paul McCartney, Elton John, Judi Dench and Margaret Atwood, among others.
Anna Wintour Also Removed Glasses for U.S. Honor
The appointment with the King wasn’t the only time in recent months that Wintour has conceded to remove her sunglasses. In January, she took them off to receive the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, from outgoing President Joe Biden. Wintour was honored for extraordinary contributions to fashion, journalism and culture.
Indoors or Out, the Famous Glasses Usually Stay On
Getting Wintour to remove the glasses is generally no easy feat. The famously demanding Vogue editor notoriously keeps them on both indoors and out. In fact, in the Hulu documentary “In Vogue: the 90’s,” as Wintour sits down for an interview, a voice off-screen can be heard asking her to remove her glasses. “No, I’m gonna wear them,” replies Wintour.
In an interview with the BBC last December, Wintour explained the reason for glasses, at least to some degree. “They help me see and they help me not see. They help me be seen and not be seen. They are a prop, I would say,” Wintour told the interviewer.
When the interviewer asks if the glasses and the sharp bob she’s known for are part of role she feels she has to perform, Wintour says, “I don’t really think about it. What I’m really interested in is the creative aspect of my job.”
As for the role often associated her, Meryl Streep’s portrayal of Miranda Priestly in “The Devil Wears Prada,” Wintour is noncommittal. She says that is “for the audience and for the people I work with to decide if there are any similarities between me and Miranda Priestly.”
And those glasses? They were back on in time to pose for photos outside Buckingham Palace.
