Pop star and former “American Idol” judge Katy Perry just capped off a year of much-buzzed-about interactions with her former frenemy, fellow pop sensation Taylor Swift, by declaring “I love her so much.”
Though the two music giants were friendly as their careers were each taking off, Perry and Swift’s five-year, public feud inspired countless headlines and even some drama-filled song lyrics. The performers eventually made up, but have been especially supportive of one another in public since February 2024, when Perry, 40, attended an Eras Tour concert and posted a backstage selfie with Swift, 35, writing, “got to see an old friend shine tonight ♥️✨”
On January 17, 2025, Perry opened up about that experience during an interview on the UK’s Capital FM radio station, which posted a social media video of her gushing about Swift. Her comments have left both stars’ fans thrilled.
In the shared clip of Perry’s Capital FM interview, she can be seen holding up an iPad that showed the selfie with Swift she’d posted nearly a year prior. The pic was taken backstage at one of Swift’s concerts in Australia, where Perry’s fiance Orlando Bloom hails from.
“This is from when I went to see the Eras Tour in Australia,” Perry exclaims to the camera. “I actually went and did a show in Australia very quickly, and I had one day off before the show, and I was like, ‘Hey girl, I’m gonna come to the show.’ And she was so excited, and I was so excited!”
“People gave me bracelets,” Perry said, wide-eyed. “And I think Rita Ora gave me a bracelet. I loved it. It’s just, like, a community. It’s an adorable, sweet community, and I got to see her and got to catch up. And I love her so much.”
Fans of both stars commented on Capital FM’s video, thrilled to see Perry’s affection for Swift is still alive and well.
“My heart melts every time my two queens talk about each other,” one fan wrote.
Another fan wrote, “The best pop girlies!!! ❤️” while numerous others called the pair “queens” and celebrated their rekindled friendship.
Katy Perry & Taylor Swift Officially Moved Past Their 5-Year Feud in 2019
Any sign of friendship between Swift and Perry is celebrated by their fans after years of tension. Early in the singers’ careers, the two started out as friends, publicly sending each other birthday messages and cat memes via social media, per Entertainment Weekly. In 2009, Swift attended Perry’s birthday party and the next year, Perry performed her hit, “Hot ‘n Cold,” during a New York stop on Swift’s Fearless tour.
But things had soured by late 2013, reportedly due to drama over several of Swift’s dancers leaving her tour early to tour with Perry, per Cosmopolitan. When Swift released her “1989” album in the fall of 2014, she told Rolling Stone that the tune “Bad Blood” was about a fellow artist, whom was widely believed to be Perry.
“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not,” Swift told the outlet about the unnamed performer. “She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?’”
“(Then) she did something so horrible,” Swift continued. “I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I’m surprisingly nonconfrontational — you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.”
Both women found ways to throw shade at each other on social media over the years, and in 2017, Perry released “Swish Swish,” which she called an “anti-bullying” tune but sounded a lot like a diss track to fans and other industry insiders, Cosmopolitan reported. When James Corden asked Perry that year about the beef, she told him, “That’s true, there is a situation. Honestly, it’s really like she started it and it’s time for her to finish it.”
In 2018, Perry sent Swift a literal olive branch, per Elle, and the next year, she posted a photo of fresh-baked cookies with the words “peace at last” and tagged Swift. A week later, Perry made a surprise appearance in Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” music video, dressed as a hamburger, officially putting the beef between them to rest.
Fast forward to Perry popping in on the Eras Tour in February 2024, kicking off a year of sweet interactions between the two. At the MTV Music Awards in September, Swift sang and danced along from her front row spot as Perry performed “Teenage Dream” — signaling that she supports Perry as much as Perry supports her.
Given that the Eras Tour ended in December 2024, Swift just have time to catch Perry on her own Lifetimes world tour, which kicks off on April 23 in Mexico City.
