Alright, Alright, Alright. Matthew McConaughey Turns Out for TX in Super Bowl Ad

Everything’s bigger in Texas, including the star power supporting the state in an ad that will run in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Dennis Quaid, Renée Zellweger and Billy Bob Thornton are all showing their Lone Star Love in an ad called “True to Texas” urging the Texas legislature to create film and television production incentives.

The ad spoofs McConaughey and Harrelson’s HBO show “True Detective.” In fact, “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto directed the commercial, which starts similarly to the trailer for season one of the show.

In an interview about filming the commercial with the New York Post, Quaid said, “It was a really fun day. It took all of about three hours to do. And we just had a blast.”

While Quaid, Harrelson, McConaughey and Zellweger are all from Texas, Thornton is not. “We let in Billy Bob. He’s not from Texas, but he played Davy Crockett, so it’s good enough for us,” said Quaid. Thornton grew up in neighboring state Arkansas.

But all the actors share a love for the state and want the opportunity to make more movies there. “We share a mentality,” says Quaid. “There’s a lot of actors that come from Texas. They leave to go where the business is. It’d be nice to be able to stay at home and get something going. [Texas has] got to compete with Georgia, Oklahoma.”

“We really want to be the new Hollywood, and also bring back crew people that have to leave to go work in Oklahoma or Georgia or Mexico. People are there,” the star added. “It’s just really providing the infrastructure and the means to do this to compete.”

Zellweger Phones In Her Part in Super Bowl Ad, Literally

In the ad, actress Renee Zellweger, who grew up in Katy, Texas, phones Quaid while he’s sitting handcuffed in the backseat of the car driven by Harrelson. “Hey y’all, I just heard from Billy Bob! Told me you’re heading to Texas!” she says.

Sporting a Texas Longhorns ballcap, Zellweger goes on to say, “Well, count me in! I’ve been hotel-hopping in all these other states for way too long. And I get it. I mean, making a production is hard. And if all these other states are gonna offer an incentive, then that’s where we’re gonna keep going, ya know? I just wish we could bring some of these productions home to Texas!”

This Isn’t the First Time McConaughey and Harrelson Have Collaborated on an Ad

Harrelson and McConaughey have collaborated on commercials before. The long-time friends appear in ads for Salesforce that regularly run during NFL games.

Super Bowl Viewers Will See a lot of McConaughey this Sunday

The “True to Texas” ad won’t be McConaughey’s only appearance in the Super Bowl’s commercial breaks. The actor is also is starring in ads for Uber Eats alongside Charli XCX, Kevin Bacon, Greta Gerwig and Martha Stewart.
