The late Queen Elizabeth has a brand-new great-grandchild, and the baby is honoring the Queen through her name.
Princess Beatrice, granddaughter of the Queen and daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, gave birth to Princess Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi on January 22. Buckingham Palace announced the birth on the Royal Family’s Instagram page.
Baby Athena joins a list of royals bearing the Queen’s name as a middle name. Those include her great aunt, Princess Anne, whose full name is Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise. Princess Anne’s daughter Zara also has Elizabeth as one of her middle names.

Princess Athena is the First Royal of New Generation
Athena, who is eleventh in line for the throne and baby sister to Wolfie and Sienna, is the first royal to be part of Generation Beta. According to an article in The Independent, social analyst and demographer Mark McCrindle says 2025 marks the start of a new generation. Generation Beta will run from 2025 to 2039.
Princess Athena’s older siblings, along with royal cousins and second cousins including Prince William’s children Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte and Prince Harry’s children Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet, are all part of Generation Alpha. Generation Alpha runs from 2010 to 2024.
In The Independent article, McCrindle says the new princess is part of the first fully digital generation, where “AI and automation are fully embedded in everyday life.”
Sarah Ferguson Celebrates Arrival of New Granddaughter

Ferguson posted on Instagram “Overflowing with love and joy to be able to welcome Athena Elizabeth Rose into the world. She is already so adored, and I’m incredibly blessed to be a Granny once again. Princess Beatrice Was Especially Close to Queen Elizabeth
Sources say Princess Beatrice was especially close to her grandmother, the late Queen. In a People magazine article, a source told the magazine the queen saved her own wedding tiara, the Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara, for Beatrice to wear in her wedding.
“The Queen saved this grand tiara specifically for Beatrice. It was always reserved for her as they are exceptionally close,” the source told PEOPLE at the time of Beatrice’s 2020 wedding, describing it as “arguably the most sentimental [piece] lent from the Queen yet.”
