Angelina Jolie Gives Glimpse Into Private Life with Kids

Angelina Jolie gave rare insight into her personal life when accepting the Maltin Modern Master Award during the 40th Santa Barbara International Film Festival February 6.

Jolie sat down for a one-on-one interview with the award’s namesake, film critic Leonard Maltin. The 35-minute conversation wound through topics including her kids and their relationship with fame. Jolie shares six children with ex-husband Brad Pitt: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne. The pair’s divorce was finally settled in December after an eight-year battle.

In the interview, Jolie said her kids are following their own paths. None of the six children want to follow in their parents’ footsteps as actors. Jolie told Maltin, “That’s not my doing. I always wanted them to be around film because … it’s such a wonderful family, to be creative, to be an artist. … They’re not interested… Some of them dance, some of them paint, some of them love theater, but none of them are dying to be on screen.”

Jolie also said of her kids that when it comes to the spotlight, “They really don’t like any of the celebrity part of it, especially Shiloh hates it. It’s not a normal thing. It’s a silly thing, really.”

Shiloh Jolie Loves to Dance

Viral videos of 18-year-old Shiloh showing off impressive dance moves have circulated on TikTok.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, when Shiloh turned 18 last year, she petitioned a Los Angeles court to legally drop the surname “Pitt.” That request was granted, changing her name from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie. Shiloh, who is the third oldest child of the two actors, is the first to legally drop the Pitt name. But 16-year-old daughter Vivienne was recently listed in a program for The Outsiders on Broadway as “Vivienne Jolie.”

History Repeats Itself. Angelina Jolie Also Dropped Father’s Name

The move by Shiloh Jolie to drop her father’s last name is a case of history repeating itself. According to In Touch magazine, Angelina Jolie legally dropped father Jon Voight’s surname in 2002, when the pair’s relationship soured after Voight accused the actress of having “serious mental problems.” The pair later reconciled, but lately their relationship has been strained by Voight’s comments about her divorce and by political differences.

Jolie-Pitt Children Work Behind-the-Scenes in Hollywood

In the on-stage interview with Leonard Maltin, Jolie said while her children don’t want to act, they are involved in film-making behind-the-scenes. Maddox and Pax both worked as assistant directors on Jolie’s latest project, “Maria.” Pax was also credited with additional photography on the set.

Jolie’s daughter Vivienne worked with her mother on the Broadway production of The Outsiders in a production role. She also appeared in Jolie’s movie, “Maleficent,” playing a young version of Elle Fanning’s character Aurora.

“It’s good to start them in working,” Jolie told Maltin. “[You’ve] got to run around and do anything for everybody. And so they’ve been doing that in a few films.”
