Kensington Palace has issued a rare statement setting the record straight about Princess Kate’s clothing choices.
The Palace had announced last week that because Catherine, Princess of Wales, wanted to shift the focus from what she’s wearing to what she’s doing, it would no longer release details of what she wears to events. But now it’s backing off that decree.
Palace Spokesman Walks Back the Statement on Clothing
In a rare reversal, a palace spokesman released a statement to E! News saying, “Over the last week, I have received numerous questions about a story regarding The Princess of Wales’s clothing and how Kensington Palace shares information about her outfits. To clarify, the comments that appeared in the article were from me, not The Princess of Wales.”
“The comments that were reported should not be directly attributed to The Princess of Wales,” the statement continued. “To be clear, there has been no change in our approach to sharing information about Her Royal Highness’s clothing.”
Princess Says Cancer Battle Shifted Her Focus
Princess Kate has remained out of the public eye for much of the past year while she battled an undisclosed type of cancer. After completing chemotherapy, the princess posted a very personal video about her cancer journey on the @princeandprincessofwales Instagram account. The Princess of Wales recently announced she is in remission and has stepped up her public duties.
In the post, the princess wrote, “This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved. Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.”
When the initial announcement came out about the palace no longer releasing details of what the princess is wearing, a palace source told British newspaper The Times, “There is an absolute feeling that it [the public work] is not about what the princess is wearing. She wants the focus to be on the really important issues, the people and the causes she is spotlighting. There will always be an appreciation of what the princess is wearing from some of the public and she gets that. But do we need to be officially always saying what she is wearing? No. The style is there but it’s about the substance.”
Princess Has Used Past Wardrobe Choices to Send a Message
Since her engagement to Prince William in 2010, Princess Catherine has often made headlines showing up for royal appearances and tours in pieces from her favorite designers including Alexander McQueen, Emilia Wickstead, Jenny Packham and Catherine Walker.
British designer Jenny Packham shared details about dressing the royal for special occasions with WWD in 2014. “It’s always quite a collaboration,” she said. “You kind of always know where it’s going to be worn.” The designer also noted that the princess has a great sense of style.
Many times, Kate has used her fashion choices as a nod to the past, honoring her late mother-in-law Princess Diana by frequently wearing her pearl-drop earrings. Of course her sapphire engagement ring was also Diana’s.
The princess has also worn historic pieces from the Royal Collection of Crown Jewels. The late Queen Elizabeth lent Kate the Cartier Halo Tiara, which she wore in her wedding.
The princess has also been seen numerous times wearing the Queen’s Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara, which was also a favorite of Princess Diana’s.
