Fans Hoped for a Taylor Swift SNL 50 Surprise Appearance

Heading into the “Saturday Night Live” special honoring the show’s 50th anniversary, Taylor Swift fans were buzzing. She was not announced as a guest for the SNL 50 show, but rumors swirled she might pop up anyway.

As Swifties watched and hoped for her to appear on the special, some revisited a story from retired “Saturday Night Live” head Lorne Michaels that they think may have impacted her appearance.

Taylor Swift Wanted an SNL Skit Pulled

As Y! Entertainment shared on February 16, Michaels shared some stories about the show’s extensive history, both good and bad. As Michaels told Vulture, Swift was approached to appear in a show skit in 2015. The skit would poke fun at Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video as well as her group of friends.

Y! Entertainment noted that the original music video included appearances by some of Swift’s girl gang friends at the time, like Gigi Hadid and Selena Gomez. The skit would have suggested that the group were “secretly members of an apocalyptic cult.”

Michaels indicated he received a call directly from Swift about the skit concept. She rejected the invitation to appear in the skit. In addition, she requested that Michaels pull the skit from the episode.

According to what Michaels relayed to Vulture, he told her, “Taylor, I do not negotiate with terrorists.” Then, he shared, he hung up the phone.

“Saturday Night Live” kept the skit in the show. Iconic show alums Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were featured in the skit, which cast them as members of what was termed a “Dope Squad.”

After the skit aired, Michaels indicated that Swift reached out to him again. He shared that her reaction was positive, as she sent him flowers. She included a note that read, “I hope there’s no bad blood.”

Swift Appeared on the Show Multiple Times After the Skit Incident

Swift appeared on “Saturday Night Live” more than once after that 2015 skit, most recently, in October 2023. Given that, it would appear there truly was no bad blood between Swift and the show that would have impacted her inclusion in the 50th-anniversary special.

Despite the rumors and hopes from fans that Swift would make a surprise appearance on the special, she was nowhere to be seen.

In the Taylor Swift subreddit, fans discussed the possibility she would show up on the special.

One fan started a thread and wrote, “I just saw an Instagram post highlighting some of the guest stars that will be on the SNL 50th anniversary special. Taylor wasn’t listed, but do we think she might make a surprise appearance?! It’s been a minute since she’s been on SNL. If not, I hope she hosts/is a musical guest with whatever her next project is!”

Another fan replied, “It’s possible… she went to the 40th anniversary special. That being said, she’s at a somewhat different position in her career these days.”

“I was thinking the same thing. I saw Paul McCartney was listed, and Miley Cyrus. So it made me think maybe there will be some other big names. But I agree with you that she is good about not taking the spotlight off of other people when it is their moment,” shared a different fan.

“100% she will be there. How could she not? Is she in the 5 timer club yet? That would be epic,” suggested another Reddit user.

Someone else added, “She HAS to be there. She has had iconic moments on the show. Monologue Sing?! I mean…”
