Martin Short probably isn’t laughing, but what started out as a joke during the “SNL50 : The Anniversary Special” segment “Weekend Update” has become a true story for him.
Sunday on the SNL50 special, SNL Weekend Update host Colin Jost said, “Health experts are facing increased pressure this winter in the face of outbreaks of COVID, the flu, RSV and nanovirus, which they’re calling a quad-demic. So we did the smart thing and packed every beloved entertainer over 60 into one tiny space.”
Just four days later, Steve Martin announced that he and fellow comedian Martin Short would have to cancel upcoming shows in their “Dukes of Funnytown” Tour in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Durham, North Carolina, because Short has come down with COVID.
Martin posted a picture on his Instagram account showing 74-year-old Short kissing Maya Rudolph on the lips backstage during the SNL50 anniversary show. He captioned the post, “Maya had Covid. Marty has Covid. I wonder why?”
At press time, neither Short nor Rudolph had commented publicly about Martin’s post.
Martin Looks at Bright Side of Concert Cancellations
Steve Martin and Martin Short were set to perform at Durham Performing Arts Center on Saturday, February 22, and Knoxville Civic Auditorium on Sunday, February 23. The Knoxville show has been rescheduled for October 17, with the Durham show rescheduled for the following day.
Looking on the bright side, Martin posted, “So sorry for the inconvenience. I think we’ll be funnier then, anyway.”
The Knoxville and Durham shows were set to be the pair’s last performances before taking a break until October.
The pair have toured together since 2015, starting with “A Very Stupid Conversation.” Their 2017 “An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life” became a Netflix special. They then did “The Funniest Show in Town at the Moment” in 2021. In 2022, they titled the tour “You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today!” This year’s tour is titled “The Dukes of Funnytown.“
Steve Martin and Martin Short have also starred alongside Selena Gomez in the hit Hulu show “Only Murders In the Building” since 2021.
Instagram Post by NBC Also Seems a Little Prophetic
After the SNL50 special, NBC posted highlights on its @nbcsnl Instagram page. When Martin delivers the opening monologue, at one point Short butts in and says, “I thought we were hosting the show together” before Steve Martin has him dragged off by ICE agents. In a post of the clip, NBC’s caption reads, “sorry, marty.”
