Movie Lovers, your big night is almost here! The 97th Annual Academy Awards are coming up Sunday, March 2.
Of all the categories, the question of who will take home the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role is among the most hotly contested. Here’s a look at the contenders, and who is predicted to win.
Adrien Brody- for “The Brutalist”
Adrien Brody snagged his second Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Laszlo Toth in “The Brutalist.” Brody plays a Hungarian-born Jewish immigrant who comes to the U.S. after surviving the Holocaust and World War II.
Timothée Chalamet – for “A Complete Unknown”
In “A Complete Unknown,” Timothée Chalamet plays a young Bob Dylan. The movie follows Dylan during an early period of his life where he chose to stray from folk music. Chalamet’s nod for Best Actor makes him the youngest two-time Best Actor nominee since James Dean. The actor earned his first best actor Oscar nomination at age 22 for “Call Me By Your Name.” In that film, he played a teenage boy who becomes the target of an older man.
Colman Domingo – for “Sing Sing”
Colman Domingo is nominated for his role as John “Divine G” Whitfield in “Sing Sing.” The movie tells the true story of the organization “Rehabilitation Through the Arts.” The RTA was formed to produce plays in the prison to curb recidivism. Domingo’s character, “Divine G” was a founding member of Sing Sing’s theater program. In fact, Divine G is also another real-life Oscar nominee for his part in writing the movie’s screenplay.
Ralph Fiennes for “The Conclave”
“Conclave” tells the story of priests from around the world gathering in Vatican City to pick the next pope. Ralph Fiennes plays a priest tasked with running the gathering of the College of Cardinals to select a new pope.
Fiennes has been nominated for an Oscar twice before, for “Schindler’s List” and “The English Patient.”
Sebastian Stan for “The Apprentice”
First-time nominee Sebastian Stan plays a young Donald Trump in the movie “The Apprentice.” In the film, Stan as Trump learns from notorious attorney Roy Cohn how to promote himself in the media. Cohn’s dictum to the future President was, “Attack, attack, attack. Deny, deny, deny. Never admit defeat.” Stan, who is perhaps best known for playing “The Winter Soldier” in Marvel movies, also received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for his performance.
Who Will Win? Experts Are Divided
“Vanity Fair” predicts Adrian Brody’s work in “The Brutalist” will win him the award. The outlet writes that despite tough competition in the category, “Brody has been a consistent, clear choice among a range of groups, intra-industry or not.”
And “The Hollywood Reporter” agrees with that prediction, writing, “Brody’s wrenching work juxtaposing hubris and humiliation distills an entire life into the raw pain of lingering trauma, the life-giving force of creative achievement and the crushing blows of the immigrant experience as his character is reminded of his place. “
But “USA Today” disagrees. The outlet predicts Timothée Chalamet will win for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.” But it also says Colman Domingo should win for “Sing Sing,” writing “Domingo digs so deep in ‘Sing Sing’ playing an incarcerated thespian that it’s a joy to watch him work.”
How to Watch the 97th Academy Awards
This year’s Oscars are hosted by Conan O’Brien. The show will air live on ABC and stream live on Hulu on Sunday, March 2, at 7:00 p.m. ET/4:00 p.m. PT, with the official live red carpet show airing at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.
