Zendaya Joins Iconic ‘Shrek’ Franchise As Shrek And Fiona’s Teenage Daughter

There’s a new face in the “Shrek” universe! None other than Zendaya is joining “Shrek 5,” which is slated for a December 23, 2026 release, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The “Euphoria” star is set to play Shrek and Fiona’s teenage daughter, which pleasantly surprised fans.

In the light of the exciting news, which was announced via the upcoming film’s first trailer, Zendaya’s tweet from 2017 is now resurfacing, per USA Today. A then 20-year-old Zendaya tweeted, “I watch Shrek too often in my adulthood.” The official Twitter page for the “Shrek” movie quote retweeted Zendaya’s 2017 post, commenting “This aged well.”

While there isn’t much known about the plot yet, it’s confirmed that Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy will reprise their beloved roles of Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey, respectively. Read ahead to see everything we know about “Shrek 5” so far.

‘Shrek 5’ Will Be Released On December 23, 2026

It’s hard to believe that 15 years have passed since 2010’s “Shrek Forever After,” but judging by Zendaya’s role in “Shrek 5,” the goal is to attract newer generations. Directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, “Shrek 5” will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the first installment, which premiered in 2001 and earned a whopping $487 million worldwide. Per ScreenRant, the “Shrek” franchise has earned over $4 billion.

Eddie Murphy Says A ‘Donkey’ Spin-Off Movie Is Coming After ‘Shrek 5’

Ten years into the “Shrek” franchise, the Puss in Boots character (voiced by Antonio Banderas) got two spin-off movies in 2011 and 2022. According to Variety, a spin-off centered on Donkey is in the works and set to begin once “Shrek 5” wraps.

“I love Donkey,” Murphy told Entertainment Tonight, according to Variety. “You know, they did ‘Puss in Boots’ movies. I was like, ‘They should have did a Donkey movie.’ Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey. … I would do a Donkey movie.”

Then, in a 2024 interview, Murphy told Collider that “‘Shrek’ is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie.”
