Earlier this year, creator and singer-songwriter Aksh Baghla announced he was forming his own boy band, in what was likely a bid to take his fan following to a new level.
First5 – comprising Daksh, Yoshi, Tan and Elton – have now put out their first single “Tu Aadatein” and ticked a lot of boxes when it comes to “India’s first next gen pop boy group” as they bill themselves – there’s sublime pop voices, chocolate boy looks, serious dance chops and plenty of goofiness for good measure.
Announcing their arrival in the same year that major label-backed groups like W.i.S.H. have thrived, it’s been a wholly different route for Baghla. He started out part of First5 as a singing member, but then when their investor backed out, he took over managing and investing in the group, effectively switching into a role he’d never taken on before. Baghla – who has over three million YouTube subscribers and has now drummed up over 26,000 subscribers for First5 – enlisted electronic artist Exbow aka Dipanshu Lather for pop production that drives “Tu Aadatein” and Akshit Bhardwaj aka Hisoka (a dancer and VFX whiz/editor) to turn director for the fun-loving introductory music video.
In an email interview with Rolling Stone India, Baghla looks back at the creation of First5 and what’s in store.
Rolling Stone India: It’s clearly been a roller coaster journey in making First5 become a reality. What has it been like seeing the love that “Tu Aadatein” has got so far?
Aksh Baghla: It’s been surreal, honestly. This is a dream come true moment for me. The love and support we’ve received for “Tu Aadatein” has been overwhelming. This song was made with so much heart and dedication and after so many challenges we faced throughout the training period. Seeing people connect with the music, the story, and the effort behind it is incredibly fulfilling and motivating. It reassures me that all the risks, sacrifices, and challenges were worth it.
I think a lot of fans have obviously come from your involvement in the project, so what do you think will make them stay knowing that you may not be among the faces in the band?
I understand that and I’ve thought about it a lot. What will make them stay is the boys’ incredible talent, their stories, and the authenticity. They’re not just performers; they’re storytellers, dreamers, and fighters. That’s what makes this a movement—it belongs to everyone who believes in chasing their dreams. While I’m not on stage with them, my vision and heart are still deeply invested in this band.
In terms of putting together a boy band, you mentioned this whole aspect of auditions, moving the members in together and making the music and then the video. What kind of reference point or blueprint did you set for First5?
The blueprint was drawn from a mix of inspirations — global boy bands, where training, discipline, and teamwork are key. But we also wanted to stay true to our Indian roots. Also, I am a creator myself so when it comes to content, I was well prepared. For me, it was about creating a family-like environment where the members could grow together, not just as artists but as individuals. The focus was on building their confidence and teamwork while building a strong foundation of music and performance skills.
You’re now crossing over to this side of manager and investor in the band, in addition to working on the music with the members. What has this change been like for you? What’s something new you’ve learned about the music industry?
It’s been a learning curve. Moving from a performer to a manager and investor has given me a 360-degree view of the industry. I’ve learned how much goes on behind the scenes, from managing finances and schedules to handling the mental well-being of the members. One of the biggest takeaways has been the adaptability. Things do go wrong at times, but what really matters is how you respond to that and take action. Also, when i met with industry professionals, I got a good idea about how the music business works.
What’s coming up from First5 in 2025? What’s your vision for the group?
2025 is going to be a massive year for First5. We have more music lined up—songs that showcase a wider range of their skills and versatility. We also plan to explore live performances, collaborations, and creating content that allows fans to connect with the boys on a personal level.
My vision for First5 is for them to become icons while staying relatable and grounded. I want them to inspire young people everywhere to chase their dreams, no matter how big or unconventional they may seem.
