Biography: Music and writing have been my most faithful and trusted mode of communication and self-expression. I write to heal. I sing to express. 'I Am when I play, while in my element and in the moment'.
What is My Story: I am of Indian origin, born in Madras (now renamed Chennai) and raised all over the world before making a base in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This is the story of an Indian kid who lived in many countries and transitioned into a third culture Canadian life #ThirdCultureWoman.
This is my story of surrender to the inescapable, of rediscovery, of self-acceptance, of a journey that includes embracing my South Asian heritage in a mainstream world, of being a proud North American and South Asian all at the same time, of being well-traveled and experiencing different cultures, and most importantly, of being a hella strong but compassionate woman.
Musical and Writing Journey: I am a trained and licensed Chemical Engineer, but I have taken a break at the moment to pursue a different journey, and here is why…
I have been singing every day since the age of eight, and my interests began with Indian classical music when I heard my mom sing and when I watched her play the Veena on a great many occasions. Although my foundation in music began with Carnatic music (A south Indian form of Classical music), my interests in contemporary vocal styles eventually took over as I began training in Opera for a very short period of time and moved onto contemporary vocal technique training for nearly 7 years. I have had close to two decades of vocal training, which is still ongoing.
I am also a trained dancer as I kept up with my Indian roots through continued training in another Indian art form known as Bharatnatyam for over 15 years.
I have been writing poetry since the age of ten when I first learned what poetry was from my English class in elementary school, therein began my expression through writing.
I am a highly experienced vocalist with over 7 years of professional live stage performance experience in Canada and the United States. I have been a lead singer and backup dancer with a popular North American ethnic orchestral band called Agni (whom I consider family) with a versatile voice to dabble in many genres including (but not limited to) Ballads, RnB, Soul, Pop, Jazz and I can sing in three languages – Tamil, Hindi, and English. Thanks to the band, I have sung alongside many great playback artists from India (name drop time): Hariharan, Mano, Sathyaprakash, Karthik, Chinmayee, Shashaa Tirupati, Sid Sriram, Suchitra, actor Chiyaan Vikram and many many more.
I am happy to announce that as of March 2017, I just made an entry as a playback singer under the guidance of Mr. D.Imman of the Kollywood Indian movie industry.
I plan to continue singing playback for the Indian movie industry, to share the contemporary English songs I write in collaboration with other artists, and to present my word art (Poetry and blog entries) on this personal website.
As long as I express what is meant to be expressed, I am doing what I intended to do.
Here is to many beginnings. May the beginnings never end.
With Love, Dee Devan
