Hearts2Hearts—an outfit of eight with Jiwoo, Carmen, Yuha, Stella, Juun, A-na, Ian, and Ye-on—SM Entertainment’s rookie girl group since Aespa and the first multi-member girl group since Girls’ Generation—has released its maiden single, “The Chase,” kicking off its journey in contemporary K-pop and global music.“The Chase,” the lead single off the same-named album and the B-side, “Butterflies,” establishes the band’s unique sound while also portraying Hearts2Hearts’ pursuit to explore the road chosen, the myriad possibilities, and all that lies ahead.

The title track emphasizes the album’s themes: “Dreams and new beginnings,” as mentioned in the release’s official statement. “The Chase” creates a surreal sonic ambiance, combining befitting audio elements in addition to solid vocals from the members to amplify the sound. In tandem, an arrangement of strong bass synth underpins its progressive build-up. There’s a marked sense of mystery about it that I like, as much as the well-textured harmonies that stand out.
Popular songwriter and record producer Kenzie and the UK R&B girl group Flo collaborated on the song, adding to Hearts2Hearts’ appeal. Though different as individuals, the group’s moniker reflects its shared goal of connecting with people—followers and listeners—through their meaningful music. Coming back to “The Chase,” Kenzie’s deft use of the Korean lyrics gives the tune an added emotional depth, and Flo’s co-composition lends a fresh R&B flair that blends in well with the release’s overall sound.

Through its video, emotive words, and performances, “The Chase” is a narrative of exploring identity and self-discovery. The visuals convey its underlying thoughts, starting with the group’s carefree excursion. As the journey goes on, the girls encounter something mysterious, causing them to deviate from their planned route. As they enter an urban setting, they evolve into “their own unique blueprint,” a metaphor for the process of finding oneself and building an identity.The displays from the band members, vivacious and in sync with the vibe, rhythms, and vocals, heighten the cinematic experience, an invitation into the realm of the song as well as into this new journey of artistic expression that mirrors the group’s own.
