Kolkata-bred composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Joy Sengupta draws from the pain of separation between lovers for his new song “Tasveer,” featuring vocals by Kinjal Chatterjee and tabla by Akshay Jadhav. Released via music duo Salim-Suleiman’s label Merchant Records, “Tasveer” comes with a colorful and artsy music video directed by filmmaker Pooja Relan.
In the video for the cinematic, evocative song, themes of love, reminiscence and artistic expression are delved into via painting, dance and of course, Sengupta and his band performing. The video is shot by Radhika Padmakumar and features a female protagonist – essayed by Husne Shabnam – looking back on a lost love through painting, while Akshat Sharma portrays a surreal male protagonist who leaves behind a lasting impression. Sengupta describes the video’s nature as something that “was conceptualized to be abstract and flowy, in tune with the song.” He adds, “Kinjal Chatterjee has added so much depth to the song, with his sublime vocal rendition.”
Among the highlights of the song is Sengupta playing the bouzouki, adding a new layer of fusion to the track. “The aim was to create this song freely as a form of expression, without adhering to any boundaries of song structures or scales. Hence, I chose a 5/8 time signature and the song keeps going into a lot of scale modulations,” he adds. In addition to Chatterjee on vocals and Jadhav on tabla, the song brings in lyricist Nandini Chaudhury, string arrangement by Srikant Krishna and is mixed and mastered by Adil Nadaf.
Sengupta, who released his debut single “Pariyon Ki Duniya” with vocalist Hansika Pareek last year, says that “Tasveer” has been written for “people who have been in love.” He adds, “‘Tasveer’ talks about the journey of nostalgia and pain, that two people go through, who have long separated, but are still caught up in memories and images from their past.”
