Lil Yachty / ian: “Hate Me”

Of course Lil Yachty is a fan of the preppy white rapper ian: Yachty is 100 percent the type of guy who just says shit to make people mad. (Remember the whole “I’ve never listened to 2Pac” thing?) Still, I’m disappointed: How does a superstar rapper/ghostwriter for the biggest male artist in the world let ian absolutely wash him? Their new song “Hate Me” is like when the random private school kid drops 30 on the ranked college recruits with shoe deals.Riding a cyber-equestrian bounce from producer ChildBoy, ian comes with a calm, Swapa-slippery flow and the sort of gleefully fried punchlines that made his breakout song “Figure It Out” instantly memorable: “Wedding cake in my blunt with no bride yet/If I face me another, I’ll die here.” Yachty is comparatively a non-factor, a flashy name to attract Kai Cenat devotees and Despicable Me 4 fans to the Cole Bennett–directed video. Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I may be forced to make an ian-only edit.ian’s has been one of the strangest ascents in hip-hop this year: From making cool, nerdy ambient rap to pushing out offensively swagless Gucci clone music to smoking Lil Yachty on a track. I’m still not sure why I should care beyond “Look at this white kid rapping like that and wow, is that him playing Beethoven on stage?” But hey, “Hate Me” kinda goes.
