Singer Sagar Bhatia‘s latest Sufi-inspired song “Raazdaariyan” sees the artist best known for qawwalis lean into heartache and introspection, with the music video starring actors Prajakta Koli and Taaruk Raina, pairing up once again after being seen in the romance series Mismatched.
The song, with music by composer Gaurav Chatterji and lyrics by Ginny Diwan, comes just in time for Valentine’s Day. A tender song built up from acoustic guitars, piano and production elements, “Raazdaariyan” comes from Bhatia’s personal experiences. It even builds up into heart-tugging pop space with singalong melodies. The artist teased the song earlier this week with footage from a recent concert where he performed the song to a full house at one of his Sagar Wali Qawwali shows, complete with torches swaying in the crowd.
Bhatia says, “‘Raazdaariyan’ is deeply personal as it reflects the emotions we all feel but struggle to express. I’ve pushed my boundaries to create something that holds the essence of Sufi while blending with a commercial sound. I’ve lived this song, and I know so many people will see their own stories in it. Having Prajakta and Taaruk bring that connection and energies to life was beyond special. They felt every beat, every silence, every unspoken word.”
In the music video, a story unfolds between Raina’s character seated in a group therapy session in rehab as he deals with loss, except where he expects comforting voices, he comes across Koli’s sarcastic character. Soon enough, they get together and build a life together, the characters marking a friend-filled birthday together, all interspersed with footage of Bhatia performing in a visual aesthetic quite far removed from his usual qawwali attire.
“Raazdaariyan” marks Bhatia’s first single of the year and follows recent mainstream success, including the song “Khudaya” for Bollywood film Sarfira in June 2024, made alongside composer Suhit Abhyankar, singer Neeti Mohan, and lyricist Manoj Muntashir.
