Mumbai artist Spryk aka Tejas Nair thinks in more than one dimension when it comes to his new EP Afterglow, a futuristic six-track collection of songs that draws from his understanding of what is human and what is artificial.
On one level, Afterglow – which follows his 2020 record Apex – is a bold and dancefloor-friendly package with songs like “Enigma” and the hypnotic “Rush” but also has lightheaded tracks like “Arches” and seemingly hip-hop influenced songs like “Synbio.”
The artist says in a statement, “With Afterglow, I set out to explore the intersection of human emotion and artificial intelligence, imagining a world where machines dream of human history and our shared stories. The EP embodies that fusion — melding organic soundscapes with mechanical precision while blending experimental textures with dancefloor energy. It’s a sonic interpretation of how our evolving relationship with technology shapes the way we feel, think, and create.”
A press release adds that Spryk’s major concerns in terms of themes are “love, wonder, and the intricate relationship between humanity and technology” on Afterglow EP. It adds, “Afterglow invites listeners into a dreamlike realm where intelligent machines explore the essence of human existence.”
The EP was previewed with the lead single “Enigma” on Oct. 18, 2024 with the full EP out on Oct. 25, 2024 via Spryk’s own label Skip-A-Beat. The artist, who has performed several audio-visual sets in the past and brought specially-curated productions to festivals like Magnetic Fields in Rajasthan in 2019 continues the experiments for Afterglow. A press release states that each of the six tracks on his new EP features “custom visuals” created for Spryk’s live audio-visual show and are also up as visualizer videos on the artist’s YouTube channel. The video for “Synbio” was made in collaboration with visual artist and designer Psynodent and “delves into the intriguing themes of synthetic biology,” the press release adds.
Spryk will next be seen live at Lollapalooza India, performing at the big-ticket Mumbai festival on Mar. 8, 2025. Sharing the lineup billing alongside everyone from pianist-composer Sahil Vasudeva and producer Sid Vashi to Punjabi pop star Talwiinder and headliners like pop artist Shawn Mendes and pop band Glass Animals, Spryk is planning to bring in special guests, plus new music and visuals to the stage. He said on Instagram while announcing his performance, “Very excited to share that I’m bringing my biggest audio-visual show yet to life in Mumbai at @lollaindia, alongside some of the biggest names in music. I couldn’t explain it all in a caption, even if I tried, but this one marks a big change in direction for me and the Spryk project, and I can’t wait to share it with you all” He added in a separate post that the set will mar “an ode to the rhythms and sounds I grew up to, along with some very special guests and visuals like never before.”
