Yamini Reddy (born 1 September 1982) is Indian classical dancer, a kuchipudi exponent.
About
One of India’s leading Kuchipudi classical dancers of today, Yamini is a power house performer. Endowed with a sculpted figure, a perfect face and scintillating grace, she has a very captivating presence with the right aptitude for rhythm and expressions.
Born to the legendary Kuchipudi exponents, Padma Bhushans Raja and Radha Reddy, Yamini has got dance in inheritance from her parents. Dance comes naturally to Yamini as swimming to a fish. Yamini learnt Kuchipudi from her parents and gave her first solo performance at the tender age of three in New Delhi that got her standing ovation. She has inherited her father’s Tandava (vigour) and mother’s lasya (grace), a combination that is evident in her style. She is the thread of continuity in the family tradition of the Reddys.
As a young dancer Yamini brings to Kuchipudi dance a youthful vibrancy which combined with years of experience makes her performances inimitable . She believes it is important to maintain a precarious balance between new experiments and tradition, thus not compromise the purity of the traditional art form itself. The future is to be built on the foundations of the past and the present. With this adage in mind, Yamini continues to master the conventional style of performing Kuchipudi dance.
“Yamini is just made for dance, she is a complete performer” complimented Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar after witnessing her performance.
Yamini started Natya Tarangini Hyderabad in 2007 where she trains students in the art of Kuchipudi Dance. Yamini is also a budding choreographer, her production ‘Harmony’ along with modern dancer Leah Curtis from New York was well received by the audience and was invited to perform at the prestigious Nishagndhi festival in Kerala. She has also authored a Research thesis ‘Audience Development for the Performing Arts in India’. She is also actively involved in organizing the ‘Parampara Series’ Music and Dance Festival in Delhi and Hyderabad.
