49 years of ‘Chupke Chupke’: Rare and unknown facts about the Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan starrer | – Times of India

‘Chupke Chupke,’ starring Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, and Jaya Bachchan, celebrated its 49th anniversary. Based on a Bengali movie, initially, Vinod Mehra, Maushmi Chatterjee, and a new pair were considered. However, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan volunteered, requesting a new setup. Rumors suggested the couple worked for minimum pay for Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

Jaya Bachchan was Hrishi Da’s favorite and like a daughter to him. She did ‘Guddi’ and ‘Bawarchi’ with him. Jaya and Amitabh did ‘Abhimaan,’ ‘Mili,’ and ‘Chupke Chupke’ with the director. Amitabh did “Anand” and “Namak Haram” with Hrishi Da. Amitabh Bachchan also gave the voice-over for ‘Bawarchi.’ Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore had worked with Hrishi Da in ‘Satyakam.’ That’s how these four stars came together for ‘Chupke Chupke.’

The film was shot at NC Sippy’s bungalow in Juhu where films such as ‘Satte Pe Satta’ and ‘Inkaar’ were shot. Later, Amitabh Bachchan bought that bungalow and named it Jalsa. Quite a few Sippy films were shot there, and it was called Bindiya back in the day.

The film was a comedy and had great wordplay. In 1989, on the day of the solar eclipse, the government showed this film on television so that people wouldn’t step out of their houses.
