The Flute Guy
Praveen Prathapan, known by his stage name The Flute Guy, is a British Indian/Sri-Lankan musician.
Introduced to the flute by his father at a young age, Praveen has been playing for 18 years. He has performed at prestigious venues across the globe, including Buckingham Palace, the Nehru Centre, and Times Square.
In 2018, Praveen will feature on Naughty Boy’s upcoming album, alongside the voices of Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Emeli Sand. He will also be performing in Canada, India, Malaysia, Singapore, the UK, and the USA.
Since 2015, after Praveen founded the Oxford-based band The Fusion Project, he has welcomed opportunities to perform and record with a variety of genres.
In 2017, Praveen’s Indian version of the hit song ‘Despacito’ went viral, garnering over 4 million views on YouTube. Praveen soon began a North America tour under the moniker ‘The Flute Guy’, performing in Boston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Muncie, New York, Ottawa, San Francisco, San Jose, and Toronto.
As of 2017, Praveen has performed in Canada, Cyprus, France, India, Italy, Malta, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA. He has also appeared on Zee TV.
Praveen is a classically trained musician, and remains close to his Carnatic roots, with collaborations with renowned artists such as Rakesh Chaurasia and Bombay Jayashri under his belt.
One of the main ways Praveen performs classically is when accompanying dance, playing flute for Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, and more, across the UK and internationally.
More recently, Praveen has also been experimenting in Western classical music, in collaborations with Western classical musicians, as well as his upcoming original compositions.
