Pop-rock duo St. Cyril – comprising vocalist-guitarist Sarthak Karkare and drummer Shashwat Karkare – have launched a music video for “My Therapist Says” off their debut album Hurt People Hurt People.
Released simultaneously, the song, music video and the 10-track album sees the sibling duo bring rock in the vein of Green Day, The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys and more over stories of introspection, friendships and mental health in a time where self-awareness is often lacking due to social media, among other factors. The brothers says in a statement, “This album is about all of us — how we perpetuate the cycle of pain without looking within, without self-awareness.”
A press release adds, “The track captures the band’s signature sound — an energetic blend of garage rock with anthemic melodies and oh-so-relatable lyrics. The signature hook line in the music video, ‘I’m a victim of a lie,’ depicts a certain proclivity that some people possess to weaponize misfortune.”
The music video features a character (credited as A Terrible, Delusional Person, portrayed by Trisha Kanga) who is seemingly stuck in a rut – a boss who piles on the work, parents who are constantly at odds with each other. She promptly turns the advice of her therapist (credited as A (Very) Traumatised Therapist), portrayed by comedian, actor and creator Zervaan Bunshah into a misguided epiphany, literally leashing her shrink and fetishizing her mental health struggles and wins alike.
St. Cyril started out with their debut single “Table for Two” in 2022, followed by a slew of singles that year. Sarthak told Rolling Stone India, “A whole lot of work has gone into setting up the sound of this project and steering it into a domain of rock music that is instantly identifiable, but most significantly, easy to listen to. We come from a school of thought that prioritizes the quality of the music over how well one particular song does on social media. With that in mind, we’ve really been focusing on building a solid oeuvre. We are now at a stage where we want to make the music reach more people.”
