ICYMI: SNL50’s Most Shareable Moments

“I’m Steve Martin. S-N-L’s newest diversity hire.” Comedian Steve Martin kicked off a more than three-hour love fest celebrating all things Saturday Night Live.

Whether you missed it or just want to re-live the fun, here are “SNL50: The Anniversary Special’s” most shareable moments:

Former Cast Members Return to the 30 Rock Stage

Molly Shannon, who was a cast member from 1995 to 2001, brought back her iconic character “Sally O’Malley” to declare “I’m proud to say I’m 50, just like Saturday Night Live!” Shannon, who is actually 60, proved she can still “kick, stretch and kick!”

Kristen Wiig, who was a cast member from 2005 to 2012, brought back her creepy tiny-handed character “Dooneese” alongside fellow SNL alums Will Ferrell (SNL 1995-2002) and Ana Gasteyer (SNL 1996-2002) and former SNL hosts Kim Kardashian and Scarlet Johansson (who is married to current SNL cast member Colin Jost.)

Eddie Murphy (SNL 1980-1984), Tracy Morgan (SNL 1996-2003) and Leslie Jones (SNL 2014-2019) all joined current and longest-running cast member Keenan Thompson (SNL 2003-present) for a Jeopardy skit. Eddie Murphy’s ad-libbed imitation of Steve Harvey cracked Jones up, making it a must-see.

SNL50: Current and Former Cast Members Get Theatrical

Keenan Thompson donned a crab costume for a “Les Miserables” skit with a host of former cast members including Maya Rudolph (SNL 2000-2007), a pregnant Cecily Strong (SNL 2012-2022), Jason Sudeikis (SNL 2005-2013) and Pete Davidson (SNL 2014-2022.) See if you catch the dig to critics at the end.

Former SNLer Kate McKinnon (SNL 2012-2002) kicked off a spoof on “Hamilton” that featured Lin-Manuel Miranda himself. The re-worked, “I Am Throwing Away My Shot” called out former cast members in the live audience, giving viewers a fun who’s who.

Nathan Lane introduced a twisted version of “The Lion King’s” iconic song, “Hakuna Matata.” But this one isn’t about “no worries” at all.

Jason Sudekis and Will Forte’s (SNL 2002-2010) take on Broadway show “Jekyll & Hyde’s” song “Confrontation” cracked up comedian John Mulaney, who was a writer on SNL from 2008 to 2013. But when Kristen Wiig, dressed as a green M&M, switched to Les Mis, that’s when the real must-see moment happened.

Meryl Streep Breaks Character During First-Ever SNL Appearance

Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep found it impossible to keep from laughing during her first-ever skit on Saturday Night Live for the anniversary special. Streep’s outrageous lines in the alien abduction skit had even seasoned actors like Woody Harrelson and John Hamm struggling to keep a straight face.

SNL50: Robert DeNiro Was Unamused by Debbie Downer

On the other hand, legendary actor Robert DeNiro was not amused by SNL alum Rachel Dratch’s (SNL 1999-2006) Debbie Downer character. In the skit, which also featured Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon (SNL 1998-2004), Dratch channels DeNiro’s “Taxi Driver” character asking,  “You talking to me? You talking to me?” “Is that supposed to be a joke?” De Niro replies unamused. Debbie responds, “No, I’m asking. I have dry eye, and it’s hard to discern if you were talking to me.”

Mike Myers, Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler Team Up for SNL50

Mike Myers (SNL 1989-1995) resurrected his “Linda Richman” character in a mash-up with Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler’s (SNL 2001-2008) iconic “Bronx Beat” skit that brought us the term “sweater weather.” You might learn some new words with this one.

Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell Steal the Show

Reviews of “SNL50: The Anniversary Show” largely agree that Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell stole the show, shining in every skit they were in.

SNL50: The Anniversary Special Runs Overtime

Three hours didn’t end up being long enough to cram in 50 years of funny. The live show ran about 15 minutes over it’s scheduled 11:00 p.m. ET end-time. It ended with the traditional crowded stage, full of those who appeared in the show.
