A well-known Hallmark alum has opened up about leaving the network just two years after signing a major deal with them. Brooke Shields starred in “The Flower Shop Mysteries” series and played the role of Abby Knight.
The series of movies, based on the Kate Collins books, aired in 2016. Brennan Elliott co-starred alongside Shields, portraying Marco Salvare.
As Us Weekly noted on January 14, Shields signed a huge deal with Hallmark in 2016 with her slated to do 16 films. However, she disappeared after the three “Flower Shop Mystery” movies aired in January, April, and June 2016.
In her new book, “Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman,” Shields detailed the decision to quit Hallmark.
“I am now a believer in only saying yes to work that serves me,” she wrote according to Us Weekly.
Brooke Shields Tried to Renegotiate Her Hallmark Contract
Shields’ new book debuted on January 14. In an excerpt shared by Us Weekly, the “Flower Shop Mysteries” star shared the reason she parted ways with Hallmark.
“I’d completed only three [movies] when I realized I had to renegotiate. I’d been hired, I was told, to help change the face of the network. They wanted me to be funny and bring more comedy to their offerings,” Shields explained.
She continued, “But as filming progressed on each of the ‘Flower Shop Mysteries’ — the franchise I was hired to headline — all the humor had evaporated.”
Shields emphasized, “There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Hallmark Channel — God knows it has a huge fan base — but it was not the future I wanted for my career.” In addition, she acknowledged, “Not everything is for everyone.”
She is “never against hard work,” Shields wrote. However, Shields continued, she is now “a believer in only saying yes to work that serves me.”
“I simply could not do ten more films that were not what I was promised and felt completely wrong for me,” Shields wrote of the Hallmark deal.
She added, “So I quit.”
Hallmark Fans Have Wondered What Happened
In her book, shared Us Weekly, Shields acknowledged that her decision surprised a lot of people. She surprised herself with the decision, Shields admitted.
“I certainly would never have done that in my 20s,” she wrote. She found other opportunities that would provide her with the work she needed. By changing direction, Shields explained she was able to choose projects that also gave her more time with her husband and daughters.
Fans took to the Hallmark Movies subreddit to share their thoughts on Shields’ revelations.
“This explains one of the biggest Hallmark mysteries — why Flower Shop was canceled,” wrote one fan.
Another Reddit user suggested, “A few other actors who have left Hallmark, a couple who have left acting completely, have voiced similar sentiments.”
Someone else wrote, “I wondered what had happened. I thought she was a fabulous Abby.”
“I enjoyed them and was disappointed when they stopped. It’s great that she chose to do what was best for her. In her early career she was just a child and the decisions made for her were not the best,” wrote someone else.
An additional Reddit user commented, “I really enjoyed the three Flower Shop Mystery movies. There was great chemistry between her and Elliott.”
