In a family that generally frowns on public displays of affection, Prince William and Princess Kate made an exception for Valentine’s Day this year. The pair posted a rare picture on their Instagram account of the Prince of Wales kissing his wife on the cheek.
While the post may be long on emotions, it’s short on words. The only caption is a red heart ❤️.
Valentine Photo Originally Featured in September Post
The photo is one that was originally included in a September 2024 video on the account honoring Middleton’s completion of chemotherapy. It was shot in Norfolk, where the couple has a country home called Amner Hall.
In the original post, the princess wrote, “This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved. Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.”
The pair married in April 2011. They have three children — Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.
Prince Harry and Wife Meghan Spend Valentine’s Day Apart
Prince William’s younger brother Harry and wife Meghan Markle spent the romantic holiday apart.
In a post on her new Instagram account, Meghan put up a black and white photo of the pair kissing. In her caption, she wrote, “Back home taking care of our babies, and missing my Valentine, as he continues on at the Invictus Games, changing lives and reminding all of us of the power of healing and resilience through these incredible veterans and their families. Beyond proud of my husband and what he’s created.
My love, I will eat burgers & fries and fish & chips with you forever. Thank you for you.#lovewins
As ever,M”
The Duchess of Sussex was there with her husband for the beginning of the games. But she flew home on February 11 to be with young children Archie, 5 and Lilibet, 3. Prince Harry stayed in Canada for the rest of the games, which ran through February 16.
The couple’s children didn’t attend this year’s games. But when he was asked if he wants them to be there in the future, Prince Harry told “Town & Country,” he would, “love for them to experience the Invictus spirit firsthand one day.”
Affectionate Post Just One of Many Signs of Shifts in Royal Family
Prince William and Princess Kate’s kiss is just one sign that this generation of royals is making some changes.
Recently, there’s been a lot of back-and-forth from Kensington Palace about a change in its policy on releasing details of what the princess wears to events. Originally, the palace said it would no longer release those details. The move was an effort to help shift the focus from what Kate is wearing to what she is doing. A week later, the palace walked that back, saying the policy has not changed.
But after declaring that she was in remission in January, Kate’s focus has shifted. As the princess said in her September Instagram post, she has a “new perspective on everything.” The Princess of Wales has ramped up her public appearances, focusing especially on young children’s emotional and mental health. She even rode a school bus full of kindergarteners to an art gallery field trip.
Another Big Decision Looms for Prince William and Princess Kate
Prince William and Princess Kate also face a tough decision this summer. As their oldest son, Prince George approaches his 12th birthday July 22, the pair are reportedly weighing their options. Do they follow tradition and send George to boarding school or break with the past and keep him in day school?
BBC Royal commentator Jennie Bond told British newspaper the Mirror, “From the reports we’ve had, it certainly seems that William and Catherine have undertaken a great deal of research into the best school for George – and, perhaps, the other children. I think it’s quite likely that, after the year they have had – and how unsettling it must have been for George and the other children, no matter how hard their parents tried to lessen the trauma of cancer – that they would all feel happier and more secure if they could remain as a tight family unit.”
The royal couple already deviated from the traditional timeline. George’s grandfather, King Charles III and father Prince William went to boarding school at age 8.
