Matt Bomer lost Superman role after being outed as gay | – Times of India

Did you know Matt Bomer had a shot at being cast as ‘Superman‘?
The actor recently disclosed that he was nearly signed on for the role of Superman in a Warner Bros film in early 2000s, but lost the role after being outed as gay. The ‘Fellow Travelers‘ star spilt the beans on THR’s Awards Chatter podcast, revealing the impact that the revelation of his sexuality had on his career.
“I went in on a cattle call for Superman, and then it turned into a one-month audition experience where I was auditioning again and again and again,” Bomer recounted.
“It looked like I was the director’s choice for the role. This was a very early iteration of Superman written by J.J. Abrams, called ‘Superman: Flyby’,” he revealed.

When asked if his sexuality was the reason he lost the role, Bomer responded, “Yeah, that’s my understanding. That was a time in the industry when something like that could still really be weaponized against you.”
Ultimately, ‘Superman: Flyby’ was shelved and Bryan Singer‘s ‘Superman Returns‘, starring Brandon Routh, was released in 2006.
Bomer publicly came out as gay when he thanked his husband, Simon Halls, and their three sons during his acceptance speech for the Steve Chase Humanitarian Award.
