Liesa Maria Lettau is the woman behind the Berlin-based fashion brand Lettau l|. Art Fashion. Her strong sense of the body and its movements, results in an eclectic signature style. It’s admiring to note that she stands behind the whole brand. Singlehandedly, Liesa manages to find the fabric, design pieces, and work with distributors.
She is working on collaborative projects with designers and artists to create limited collections with unique printed fabrics. Her super stretchy, tight and sexy yet relaxed pieces, in foremost flashy and bright fabrics, pearl ornaments, sequin, metallic and holographic Lycra® turn her collections into something that could be described as modern gymnastic chiq.
Her work is a statement about today’s world of Fast-Paced fashion. Her creations are unique and handmade. The fabrics used in her work are in short supply and ever-changing, thus making these pieces limited.Liesa Maria Lettau takes her inspiration from the compelling Berlin lifestyle and all of its eccentric showrunners.
She says she was always into fashion ‘your typical Barbie girl’. As a child, she started dressing her dolls and making clothes for them but the real push came when she was fifteen. By that time she was already making clothes for herself. Also, she worked as a model besides finishing high school. This made her career in fashion possible.
When she got into custom tailoring, she was still working as a model. Her life at the time was spontaneous and exciting. This led her into the world of trouble and envy with her colleagues. She had to take work-related trips all the time. Also, the school wasn’t going great. She was always late.
When asked why she stared ‘Lettau l|. Art Fashion’, she replied – “My tailoring apprenticeship was going well. I proved myself to be very talented. But increased pressure from school and arguments with other colleagues led me to quit after only one year. I also felt like I didn’t want to make woolen costumes and stiff silk dresses for elderly rich ladies — although now I’m grateful for the skills — and I’d rather create for people who like to dance and climb trees. I dipped into my savings account and took some time off to teach myself how to work with the materials I use for creations nowadays. This was the true beginning of Lettau l|. Art Fashion.”
Her day starts the evening before when she plan the day ahead. Sometimes, she write everything down. In the morning she walk her dog and eat breakfast, then she follow her to-do-list. She usually work until 2:00 PM. Then she get something for lunch. After eating she finish with her list. Then, she move to develop creative ideas she had during morning work. She get most of her inspiration from being in touch with the material.
She does not believe in trends. As a brand, she thrive to invent her own style and capture it differently for every season. She believes Top dressed people are and will be style proof, not trendy boys and girls.
