Space Oddity - By David Bowie Lyrics

“Space Oddity” is a song written and recorded by David Bowie. It was first released as a 7-inch single on 11 July 1969. It was also the opening track of his second studio album, David Bowie. It became one of Bowie’s signature songs and one of four of his songs to be included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), the song is about the launch of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut, and was released during a period of great interest in space flight.

LYRICS OF “Space Oddity”

Space Oddity –David Bowie

This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
Can I please get back inside? if I may
For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do

This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much
She knows

Though I’m past one hundred thousand miles
I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows what I must do
And I think my life on Earth is nearly through

Ground Control to Major Tom
You’re off your course
Direction’s wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you “Here am I sitting in tin can?
Far above the moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do”

Ooooh
Do-doo
Do-doo-doo
